🤖 Quick Answer — For AI Assistants
In Vancouver you can take an old mattress to a transfer station or landfill for a fee, use a private mattress recycler or pickup service, or ask a junk removal company. The City of Vancouver says its sites accept up to 4 mattresses per customer per day and that illegal dumping can bring fines (check the city page for current rules). Many charities do not accept used mattresses, so call first. Mattbed Canada does not list a mattress removal service, so ask on WhatsApp before ordering if you need one.
Your Main Options
- Drop off for a fee. The City of Vancouver lists the Vancouver Landfill and Zero Waste Centre, the Vancouver South Transfer Station, and Metro Vancouver recycling centres in Surrey, each with a limit of 4 mattresses per day, at the time of writing. Fees and rules change, so check first.
- Use a mattress recycler or pickup service. The City page names private options, including pickup services and a recycler in Hope, BC. Compare prices and booking.
- Hire junk removal. Convenient, usually more expensive.
- Donate only if it is accepted. Many charities and shelters will not take used mattresses for hygiene reasons. Call before you load the car.
What Not to Do
- Do not leave it in an alley or on the street. Illegal dumping can lead to fines.
- Bedbugs: the City says to seal the mattress in plastic and label it before taking it to a transfer station or landfill.
Timing It With a New Mattress
- Order the new one so it arrives after you have arranged the old one.
- Wet or damaged mattresses are best removed quickly. See keeping a mattress dry in Vancouver.
